On the third morning, I tried to find a small neighborhood shrine before going to Dazaifu. My phone map said I was close, but the narrow streets all looked similar.
An older man was parking his bicycle near a small shop. I showed him the shrine name on my phone and asked where it was. He looked at the screen, then pointed to a narrow lane between two houses.
He did not speak much English, but he used his hands slowly and clearly. Before leaving, he bowed lightly and smiled.
A few minutes later, I found the shrine. It was quiet and small. I remembered the old man more than the building, because his kindness had become part of the road.
