After leaving Hiroshima, I returned to Tokyo and visited a small exhibition near Ueno Park. On the wall, a black-and-white photograph showed Tokyo just after the Second World War. The streets were broken, and children stood beside wooden stalls.
An elderly volunteer pointed to the photograph and said that Ueno had once been filled with people looking for food, work, and missing family members. Then he pointed outside the window, where trains were moving and students were laughing.
He said, “Recovery was not one big miracle. It was many ordinary mornings.” People rebuilt shops, cleaned streets, opened schools, and carried goods by hand.
Standing between the old photograph and the living city outside, I understood that postwar recovery was not only about buildings. It was about people choosing to begin again, one small task at a time.
