From Shimabara, I returned toward Nagasaki and visited Sotome, a coastal area connected with the Hidden Christians. The road curved along the sea, and small villages rested between green hills and water.
A guide took me to a simple house museum. Inside, she pointed to a small object that looked ordinary at first. Then she explained that some families had hidden Christian prayers, images, and symbols inside everyday things.
She spoke about Father Marc Marie de Rotz, a French missionary who later served the poor people of Sotome. But before his time, many believers had already kept their faith in silence for generations.
The most moving part was not a large church. It was the idea of a prayer whispered so quietly that even neighbors might not know.
Sotome taught me that faith can survive without public buildings, loud songs, or open signs. Sometimes faith survives as memory, habit, hidden words, and a hope passed from parent to child.
