After leaving Nagasaki, I flew north to Sapporo in Hokkaido. A local pastor met me near Sapporo Station and took me to a small church on a quiet street. The church was not famous, but old photographs inside showed missionaries, Japanese believers, winter worship services, and children gathered around a small stove.
The pastor spoke about William S. Clark, who taught in Sapporo during the early modern period. He said mission in Hokkaido was not only about preaching. It was also about schools, farming, language, hardship, and friendship.
As snow began to fall outside, I looked at the small cross on the wall. In Sapporo, I learned that mission can grow slowly in cold places through patient relationships and ordinary service.
