From Sapporo, I returned to Tokyo on Sunday morning. A friend invited me to worship at a small Protestant church near Kichijoji. The church stood on a side street between a bakery and an apartment building.
Only about thirty people gathered. An elderly woman handed me a bulletin and pointed to an empty seat. Pastor Sato welcomed visitors in simple Japanese and began the service. I did not understand every word, but I recognized prayer, Scripture reading, and song.
After worship, a young man told me that being Christian in Japan can feel lonely, but the church gives him a family of faith. That small church helped me see Japanese Christianity today as a quiet community that gathers faithfully in ordinary neighborhoods.
